Mental Health: How to manage and reduce stress

Improving your mental health is often a very changing and difficult task that very few people succeed in but here we will deal with how to manage and improve your mental health with regards to stress. Stress is felt due to pressure, demand, or worries. It may involve positive and negative effects on your health whether physically, emotionally, and mentally. We may be more focused and alert in high-stress situations enabling us to react quickly and perform better.

Your body’s reaction to change, called a stress response, produces a fight or flight response using stress hormones. Like cortisol and adrenaline, these hormones trigger a physiological response under stress and accounts for the symptoms we experience. Increased heart rate, nausea, aches, and indigestion are examples of these symptoms. After the threat subsides, so do the symptoms.

However, constant stress over an extended period allows the body’s stress hormones to remain and cause physical ailment and problems like lower immunity levels, digestive difficulties, and irritable bowel syndrome. The emotional symptoms involve anxiety, irritability, aggression, and change in behaviour, among other things. These effects may lead to physical symptoms. Therefore, stress needs to be managed and reduced for the benefit of your overall health and wellness.

Stress appears differently for different people, but there are common signs and symptoms to help you identify if you are stressed. You can look out for anxiety, mood swings, depression, irritability, low sex drive, nausea, constipation, change in appetite, change in mood, difficulty relaxing, and loss of confidence.

Visit your GP if you experience these symptoms for an extended period.

The first step to managing and reducing stress is to be aware of its negative impact on your health. Identify the relationship between added pressure and fatigue or ailment. Your body tends to warn you when stress levels are high. Don’t ignore the signs of tight muscles, extreme fatigue, and migraines.
